Proclamation of 15 September, 1714 by the Lords Justices of Great Britain offering a Reward of One Hundred Thousand Pounds for the capture of the Pretender (litho)
This proclamation outlawed the 'The Old Pretender' and was issued 4 days before the arrival in England from Germany of the Elector of Hanover, the future King George I; the reward of £100,000 represents, using a purchasing power calculator, over £11 million pounds in 2010; after the death of Queen Anne on 1 August 1714 , her half brother, James Francis Edward Stuart (1688-1766) known as 'The Old Pretender' was (with 50 other Catholic claimants) ruled out of succession to the throne of Great Britain by the Act of Settlement of 1701 which gave the crown to George, the Protestant Elector of Hanover, a great grandson of James I of England and James VI of Scotland; the Lords Justices were an interim Regency Council, composed of English and Scottish Whig aristocrats and the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, who supported a Protestant succession to the throne of Great Britain and were determined to prevent any Catholic claimant succeeding;
